One of the main goals of The Lavender Project is to dedicate a percentage of the profit created from the selling of their products back to the community and to the many programs that occur at the community center in La Colorada.
Currently the programs and the community center are supported through the generosity of the projects main sponsor St. Anthony’s Alliance.
The current programs offered at the La Colorada:
Every morning before school approximately 25 liters of a soy based nutritional drink is served to children and family members in La Colorada. The community center has been equipped with the facilities to provide these meals on a daily basis.
After school program
The children and youth of La Colorada are fortunate to have after school programs offered at the community center. The programs offered include help with homework, improvement of reading skills and organized educational activities.
Scholarship (Becas) program
Currently 18 youth receive financial support so they can attend school on a regular basis. Without the financial aide the youth would not be able to attend school or plan for secondary education.
Library and computer center
The La Colorada community center houses a small library which offers a selection of youth and children’s books that can either be read on site or checked out to enjoy at home. In addition the library all has 3 computers that the children and youth can do their homework on and play educational games. Currently we are seeking support to upgrade software and programs and financial support to buy new computers.
Emergency Medical Transport Service
Should a resident of the community become ill and need emergency medical transport to Dolores Hildalgo or to a larger center, St. Anthony’s Alliance offers funding for the payment of the transportation needed.
The community center has also been equipped with a mini medical center with limited supplies in the case a person should need care for injuries of a less urgent nature. The clinic is open daily to residents of La Colorada for basic services, checking blood pressure, insulin shots and other basic services. House visits are also available for residents who cannot come to the clinic.
Payment of power, gas and internet for the community center
It is through the support sponsorship of St. Anthony’s Alliance that the community center at La Colorada is able to operate day to day with access to power, gas and internet. Without this support the center would not have the funds to provide services or to pay for the utilities needed to operate on an ongoing basis.
